In the UK, women between the age of 50yrs and 70yrs are screened every 3yrs by the NHS for breast cancer using mammograms, however some women now opt to have it performed every year as in many European countries and the USA. Whilst this is reasonable in the case of a strong family history or other risk factors such as benign breast disease or cysts, it is not recommended under the age of 40 years as the breast tissue is too dense and the test is not reliable.
The mammogram is conducted by a radiographer who will help position each breast one at a time on a small flat plate with an X-ray plate under it. Above this is a second plate which is pressed down in order to compress the breast between two plates. In the UK two pictures are taken (from above and the side) to ensure accurate screening thus increasing the detection rate. Early diagnosis of cancers usually means they are easier to treat, need less treatment and are more likely to be cured.
Your mammogram results will be available within a few days following your mammogram.
