Bladder & Incontinence

What is Urinary Incontinence?

Problems with the bladder are not unusual but can be distressing and result in loss of confidence and reduction in a women’s quality of life as it interferes with day-to-day activities. The sudden involuntary loss of urine or difficulty holding onto urine in the bladder is extremely common, affecting 60-70% of all women and more so after childbirth and additionally with advancing age.

At the Surrey Park Clinic, we look to diagnose and find solutions to get you back to a comfortable, confident life again.

Our Urogynaecology Specialist Nurse works closely with our Physiotherapist to ensure you get a tailored treatment bespoke to you. So why not book in for your free 15-min initial consultation so that you can find out more about how we can help.

Are they different types of Urinary Incontinence?

There are two types of incontinence:

Stress Incontinence

This is where loss of urine occurs with straining, coughing, laughing or sudden movement. It is usually due to a change in the pelvic anatomy or weakening of the pelvic floor, so when there is a rise in abdominal pressure, the direction of pressure does not act to close the urethra (tube leading from the bladder), but instead is directed on the bladder resulting in involuntary loss of urine.

Bladder Instability

Symptoms can include:

  • Urgency to pass urine (having to dash to empty bladder)
  • Frequency of emptying (small or large volumes)
  • Getting up at night to pass urine
  • Over-activity of the bladder muscle
  • Polyps or lesions in the bladder causing irritation
  • Infection or inflammation
  • Recurrent Urinary Tract Infection
