Cervical Screening

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women under the age of 35 yrs and causes approx 1,000 deaths per year in the UK. Most cervical cancers are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Symptoms include:

Reducing your risk

Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that IS preventable because dangerous pre-cancerous cell changes can be picked up in smear tests and any abnormal cells removed before they develop into cervical cancer. Research suggests that the cervical screening programme saves around 1000 lives every year. There is also an HPV vaccine available which prevents against infection with the Human Papilloma Virus (types 16 & 18), the most common cause of cervical cancer.

Screening and preventative treatment

Smear test

In the UK the NHS provide a smear test every 3 years, however there is an increasing demand from many women to have this test every year, as is offered in Europe and the USA. Here at The Surrey Park Clinic you can book a smear test and have your results back within 72 hours.  This is particularly useful and may provide extra reassurance if there is previous infection with wart virus (HPV-Human Papilloma Virus) when high risk testing is performed at the same time.

The old style smear has been superseded by the endocervical brush test, combined with the latest highly accurate liquid based cytology and consultant cytologist assessment. If required, colposcopy and treatment is performed without delay in our purpose built treatment room.

Colposcopy

This is an outpatient treatment for the assessment and treatment of premalignant, inflammatory or suspicious changes on the cervix. The colposcopy will be performed under local anaesthetic by one of our accredited specialist gynaecologists. Results are processed quickly and advice given.
